Anne Abernethy, DVM

Dr. Abernethy completed her undergraduate studies at University of Virginia and received her DVM from the University of Georgia. After graduation, Dr. Abernethy completed a small animal medicine and surgery internship at the Veterinary Specialty Center of Tucson in AZ. Outside of work, Dr. Abernethy enjoys working out, craft beer, and hanging out with her animals. Dr. Abernethy’s household includes a Pitbull, Chocolate Lab, a baby English Bulldog, and an orange DSH.
Kellett Babb, DVM
babbDr. Babb received her Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology in 2007 and her DVM from North Carolina State University in 2012. After graduation, she completed a small animal medicine and surgery internship at the Veterinary Specialty Hospital of the Carolinas. In her spare time, she enjoys photography, kickboxing and landscaping.

Stephanie DeVito, DVM
devitoDr. DeVito completed her undergraduate studies at Rutgers University in 2009 and received her DVM from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in Blacksburg, Virginia. After graduation, she completed a small animal medicine and surgery internship at Veterinary Specialty & Emergency Services in Rochester, New York. Outside of work, she enjoys skiing, reading, running, football and home remodeling shows.


Austin Dicken, DVM

Dr. Dicken is from Indiana, studied at Indiana University, Colorado State University and completed his veterinary degree at the University of Edinburgh in the UK. His interests include surgery, physical rehabilitation, acupuncture and holistic medicine. Outside of work he enjoys rock climbing, hiking and being outdoors.


Liana Granum, DVM
granumDr. Granum received a Bachelors of Science in Biology and a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Oregon State University. After completion of her veterinary degree, she completed a small animal medicine and surgery internship at VCA Northwest Veterinary Specialists near Portland, Oregon and then a neurology internship with Bush Veterinary Neurology Service. She spends time outside work training for marathons, lifting, and spending time with her two cats, Quiz and Chaos.


Sarah Quarterman, DVM
deckerDr. Quarterman (formerly Dr. Decker) is a born and raised Tennessean. She graduated from The University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine in 2013. Go VOLS! She especially enjoys cardiology and emergency medicine. At home, she has a loving 6 year old Golden Retriever and a sweet 3 year old Long Haired Dachshund. When not at work, she and her husband enjoy brewery tours, traveling, hiking, and watching anything science-fiction.


Craig Proietti, DVM

Dr. Proietti graduated from St. Georges University School of Veterinary Medicine, located on the Caribbean island of Grenada, in 2014. His interests within the veterinary field include cardiology, trauma and critical care. Outside of work, Proietti enjoys hiking, biking, kayaking and spending time with his pups at the river; Riley, a mixed breed who loves rock climbing, and Gator, a pitbull with lots of energy.


Julie Rao, DVM
Dr. Rao received her Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science from Virginia Tech in 1992 and her DVM from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in 1996. She has two human children, one German Shepherd, two cats, one turkey, two ducks, multiple chickens and a guinea pig. She enjoys gardening, crafts, sports and playing with her children.

Jess Weidman, DVM, DACVIM, ACVIM
weidmanDr. Weidman received his bachelor’s degree from Pomona College in Claremont, CA and his DVM from Oregon State University. He completed his small animal medical internship at Veterinary Medicine and Surgery Group in Ventura, CA and then joined the cardiology residency program at CVCA. Dr. Weidman completed his residency and became board certified in cardiology in July of 2006. His professional interests include emergency and critical care of the cardiac patient as well as cardiac pharmacology. Dr. Weidman has a large four-legged family with three dogs and one cat. Outside of work, he enjoys running, biking, and playing chess.
Emily Olson-Westphal, DVM, Diplomate, ACVIM
emily-olson-1Emily attended Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, TX, prior to being accepted to veterinary school at Kansas State University in Manhattan, KS. After receiving her DVM, she completed a rotating small animal internship at NC State University. She returned to Kansas State for a cardiology residency program and received her board certification in cardiology in 2011. Dr. Olson-Westphal has over 5 years of experience in private practice referral medicine. In her spare, Dr. Olson-Westphal enjoys playing golf, hiking, traveling and spending time with her two dogs and cat.

Nicola Williamson, DVM, Diplomate ACVD
williamsonDr. Williamson has been serving central VA since 2003. A University of Virginia graduate, Dr. Williamson became a DVM at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. After an internship in internal medicine and surgery at the Animal Medical Center in NYC, she completed a residency at University of Tennessee before becoming board certified in veterinary dermatology. Dr. Williamson was voted Best Veterinary Dermatologist in Richmond and central VA by other veterinarians, in Virginia Living Magazine.
Elizabeth Toops, DVM, Diplomate ACVD
toopsDr. Toops obtained her undergraduate degree in Biology at Purdue University and her DVM at Ohio State University. She completed a small animal rotating internship in Internal Medicine and Surgery at Carolina Veterinary Specialists. She completed a residency in dermatology and a master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences at Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Toops became board certified in veterinary dermatology in 2010.

Tracy Lord, DVM
lordDr. Lord completed her undergraduate studies at James Madison University and graduated from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in 1996. She first became interested in alternative medicine in veterinary school. Dr. Lord was certified in acupuncture through the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society in 2000 and completed her initial Chinese herbal training through the same organization in 2001. In 2004, Dr. Lord became certified in animal chiropractic through the Healing Oasis Center. She is currently working towards obtaining a graduate diploma in Veterinary Chinese herbal medicine. Dr. Lord has been working exclusively as a holistic veterinarian since 2001. She opened Four Paws in 2014.

Ashleigh Seigneur, DVM, MVSc, DACVIM 
siegnuerDr. Seigneur completed her DVM education at Ohio State University. After graduation, she completed a small animal medicine and surgery internship at Iowa State University, followed by a Small Animal Internal Medicine Residency and Masters in Veterinary Medicine at The Atlantic Veterinary College in Prince Edward Island, Canada. Dr. Seigneur has been board certified in Small Animal Internal Medicine since January 2015. Outside of internal medicine she enjoys kayaking, hiking, reading, and baking.
Candice Bailey, DVM, MS, DACVIM
baileyDr. Bailey completed her undergraduate studies at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina and received her DVM from Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine in Alabama. After graduation, she completed a small animal surgery and medicine internship at Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine. In 2013, Dr. Bailey completed an internal medicine residency and earned a Master’s of Veterinary Science degree from Oregon State University.

Martin Young, MS, DVM, DACVIM
younDr. Young received a Master of Science degree in Anatomy and Neurobiology from Colorado State University where he also received his DVM. In 2007, he completed a small animal medicine and surgery internship at South Paws Veterinary Specialty & Emergency Center in Fairfax, Virginia before being accepted as the first resident in the BVNS Residency program. Dr. Young completed his residency in 2011 and practiced in Northern Virginia before relocating to Richmond.
Michael Higginbotham, DVM, DACVIM
higgsDr. Higginbotham, an Alabama native, obtained his BS in Wildlife Biology and a DVM from Auburn University. After graduation, Dr. Higginbotham completed a small animal medicine and surgery internship at Mississippi State University and neurology internships at University of Georgia and Affiliated Vet Specialists before completing his Neurology & Neurosurgery Residency at the Veterinary Neurological Center in Las Vegas. He received his Diplomate in Neurology in 2011.

Angharad Waite, VMD, DACVIM
waiteDr. Waite graduated from Princeton University magna cum laude and then attended the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary School, obtaining her VMD in 2008. She stayed at Penn to complete a small animal medicine and surgery internship followed by a residency in medical oncology at Cornell University. During the last year of her residency (2012) she received the Small Animal Resident of the Year Award from the fourth year class. She was also the recipient of the 2013 Fetch a Cure Knowledge Award.
Ekta Rattan, DVM
erattanDr. Rattan completed her undergraduate degree in Animal Biology at University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada and completed her VMD at St. George’s University. She completed her clinical year at Cornell University and rotating internship at Pieper Memorial Veterinary Center in Connecticut. She hopes to pursue a career as a boarded veterinary oncologist.

Richard P. Suess, Jr., DVM, Dipl. ACVS
suessDr. Suess completed his undergraduate studies at Virginia Tech and obtained his DVM at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in 1989. Following graduation, he completed a one-year rotating internship and a three-year surgical residency at Cornell University. Upon completion of his residency, he was invited to remain on staff at Cornell as an instructor of veterinary surgery, during which time he completed his credentials for board certification and became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1994. In 1995, Dr. Suess returned to the VMRCVM as a faculty member in small animal surgery. The following year he left academics and has been in private practice in Virginia ever since.
Roy F. Barnes, DVM, Dipl. ACVS
barnesDr. Barnes attended Mary Washington College as an undergraduate and received his DVM from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in 2000. In the following years, he completed a general rotating-internship at the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine and a surgical internship in a large referral surgical practice in Texas. Following his internships, Dr. Barnes completed a surgical residency at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. After his residency, Dr. Barnes was a Clinical Assistant Professor and Director of Companion Animal Rehabilitation at the University of Illinois. He became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2006.

Sevima A. Aktay, VMD, Dipl. ACVS
aktayDr. Aktay completed her undergraduate studies at Boston University and received her VMD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 2006. The following year, she cmpleted a general rotating-internship at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine followed by a surgical residency at Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine and Angel Memorial in Boston Massachusetts. Dr. Aktay became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2011


Todd R. Hamilton, VMD, Dipl. ACVS
hamiltonDr. Hamilton, a veteran of the US Army, graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point and University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. Upon completion of his veterinary degree, he pursued a rotating small animal medicine and surgery internship at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital in NJ. The following year, he began a surgical residency at the University of Pennsylvania. He became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2015.


Alex Padron, DVM, Surgical Resident
padronDr. Padron completed undergraduate studies at Florida International University and obtained his DVM at St. Georges University School of Veterinary Medicine. He completed clinical rotations at Oregon State University, as well as a general rotating internship at Animal Specialty Group in Los Angeles, CA and an internship at Sonora Veterinary Specialists in Phoenix, AZ. He completed an internship with Virginia Veterinary Surgical Associates in 2013. Dr. Padron has taken the next step toward board certification by continuing studies and training at VVSA as a Surgery Resident.

giannettoDr. Giannetto completed undergraduate studies at Boston University and received her DVM from The University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine in 2013. She completed a one-year general rotating internship at Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston, MA and a one-year surgical internship with VVSA. She is staying at VVSA to participate in our Surgical Residency Program on her way to board certification.

She has management and marketing experience in small business and corporate retail. Angelina’s heart lays with animal advocacy and she is a longtime volunteer and foster for Mid-Atlantic Pug Rescue and Best Friends.
